I had put a deposit down for the new 500mm PF - needing a lighter less bulky rig with good IQ. But the value proposition has been good with a 2nd hand body and new 200-500mm, and with lots of shots some decent captures were possible. Shooting darting birds when you can hardly see them is a recipe for frustration, and leaving the VR on does degrade sharpness. There's no panning mode on the supertele lenses and for shots above 1/500s expert advice is to turn VR off. The VF isn't WYSIWYG of course so exposure errors are more common. The blackout has been measured at 60% so tracking often is a matter of luck. It's harder to get the shot with the D500 than with my G9 mirrorless. So in 10 months I've taken 40,000 shots and that includes my best work.
